Do you remember the last time you cleaned your carpets? Here's how to clean them properly.

Carpeting can help give your home a warm, soft appearance and increase its comfort level. But it can also trap dirt and grain as well as stains, so you'll need to clean your carpets effectively in order to keep them clean and looking their best.

Our REALTORS® suggest the following steps to clean your carpets the right way:

  • Stick to a regular vacuuming schedule.
Vacuum your carpets at least once a week, and if you have kids or pets, you'll probably want to do it twice a week. The same applies to high-traffic areas of your home. For the strongest suction and best results, make sure your vacuum is set to the correct height for your carpet.

  • Give your vacuuming a boost.
If your carpets are showing signs of dirt or stains, use some products to help give your vacuuming a boost. You'll have your choice of powders you can sprinkle on your carpet, foam sprays, and liquid shampoos. Use a bristle brush to work your product into stained areas, let it dry, and then vacuum.

  • Use extra tools for quick cleanups.
If you have a small area you need to address in-between vacuuming sessions, keep some tools on hand to help you get the job done quickly and efficiently. Use a lint roller to pick up spilled crumbs, and run a rubber-edged squeegee over areas to collect pet hair.

  • Invest in an at-home carpet shampooer.
To help clean your carpets more deeply than a vacuum or spot cleaning can, buy a carpet shampooer. These products clean carpets by using water, a cleaning solution, and suction to remove dirt and stains, and they're able to clean more deeply, removing stuck-on stains and embedded grime that a vacuum cleaner can't handle. Not only can you clean an entire room or house of carpet more thoroughly, but you can also use your at-home shampooer to treat spills that you haven't had luck removing with other methods. Before you start, use it on a small area to make sure it doesn't harm your carpet. And when you're done, help your carpet dry more quickly by using fans or opening windows.

  • Rent a carpet-cleaning machine.
Even if you own a carpet shampooer (and especially if you don't) you may want to rent one from time to time. Brands like Rug Doctor spray hot water and detergent on the carpet and then extract it. They're more effective — and expensive — than at-home units, so they're often worth renting occasionally.

  • Pay for a professional carpet cleaning service.
Professional carpet cleaning services charge by the room or the square footage, and use steam, shampooing, or dry powder to clean your carpet. Steam cleaning uses a wand or brush to push steam into your carpet, which loosens dirt. The water and loosened dirt are then extracted. Shampooing uses water and detergent to clean your carpeting, and encapsulation uses a powdery cleaner to trap dirt and bubble it to the top of your carpet where it can be extracted. These services can help not only if you're planning to stay in your home for a while but also if you're selling it and need to spruce up your carpeting for potential buyers.
