One of the most popular spots for Midland locals to enjoy some time outdoors, Midland City Forest is a great year-round destination that really comes to life in winter. This woodsy wonderland includes 7.5 miles of groomed snowshoeing and cross-country skiing trails, as well as a 13-mile network of mountain bike trails that are popular among fat-tire cyclists in winter. Midland City Forest also has a toboggan run and even a lighted ice rink with open skating. The forest is open every day from dawn until dusk and is within walking distance of many Midland homes for sale.
- Whiting Forest at Dow Gardens - 1809 Eastman Ave., Midland, MI 48640
Dow Gardens is a spectacular 110-acre botanical garden in the heart of Midland. One of the city's most famous attractions, the garden includes Whiting Forest, a 55-acre woodland that's home to America's largest canopy walk. Stretching 1,400 feet and soaring 40 feet in the air, the walkway offers amazing birds-eye views of the wintry forest. The canopy walk is open year-round, but for public safety, it occasionally closes in winter during icy conditions.
Chippewa Nature Center - 400 S. Badour Rd., Midland, MI 48640
A popular hiking spot during the warmer months, Chippewa Nature Center opens its 19-mile network of trails to cross-country skiers when the snow flies. This 1,500-acre slice of forest is open to the general public every day from dawn until dark and is operated as both a protected wildlife area and a 501 non-profit educational organization. The nature center also hosts guided snowshoe hikes in winter, and gear rentals are available for participants.
- Pine Haven Recreation Area - 1490 W. Maynard Rd., Sanford, MI 48657
Midland County has a lot of hiking areas that are open to cross country skiing in winter. But Pine Haven Recreation Area is the only one that was actually designed with skiers in mind. The 325-acre recreation area is home to an extensive network of trails, clearly marked with signs indicating the mileage and degree of difficulty. Most of the trails are easy-to-moderate for cross country skiers, and the serene woodlands offer endlessly picturesque scenery.
